Douglas County Choice Scholarship Program to be Reconsidered by CO Supreme Court in Light of Trinity Lutheran Ruling

We are so excited about the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on the Trinity Lutheran case, and what that could mean for the students in Douglas County and throughout the nation.

As you can tell from today’s Wall Street Journal editorial, the decision could signal the beginning of the end for bigoted “Blaine” language in some 38 state constitutions. But it doesn’t guarantee it.

A quick explanation here. Blaine language says that the government can’t give money to “sectarian” schools. Our Ross Izard explains how these hateful laws came to be and how this post-civil war representative hoped his anti-Catholic crusade would propel him into the White House. (Spoiler…it didn’t.)

0221_Part 8 HUD/AFFH–June 27, 2017_letter to County Commissioners before their vote

June 28, 2017

This is a letter to the Jeffco County Commissioners June 27, 2017 — given them yesterday, before I testified:

Commissioners – I appreciate the opportunity to speak.

Commissioner Szabo asked me to sort through colliding opinions about whether or not to accept HOME and CDBG money.

People on both sides are convinced they are looking out for people in this county – both sides are aware of a shortage of housing for seniors, low income working people, etc.

After weeks of interviews and study, I recommend voting against accepting HOME and CDBG money.

The people I talked with in our county government are working well over 8-hour days, to bring people out of poverty.  They are providing personal counseling, and schooling to train people to become literate and competent, so they can qualify for better jobs.  Some is financed with the help of HUD money.

People who don’t want us to accept the funding, are also working tirelessly.  They research and inform, and find money to replace HOME and CDBG money. They believe that the federal government should get out of the housing business, so we can have a voice in where and how we live.

0218_ALABAMA TEST CASE OF TRUMP ADMIN’S COMMITMENT TO LOCAL CONTROL OF EDUCATION – BY DR. SUSAN BERRY — BREITBART – 6.14.17

2017-06-19

Excerpt from email that follows:

“Senior fellow at American Principles Project Emmett McGroarty tells Breitbart News:

“The fact that Alabama can’t freely choose its assessments confirms that ESSA failed to return control over K-12 education back to state and local government.  No person, no administration has come up with a way for the federal government to exercise such power without it being an unaccountable political bully. It is time to stop this farce and to truly return education policymaking to state and local government, where it would be closest to parents and other citizens.”

“Alabama ‘Test Case’ of Trump Administration’s Commitment to Local Control of Education”

By Dr. Susan Berry

 http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2017/06/14/alabama-test-case-trump-administrations-commitment-local-control-education/

The Trump Department of Education’s rejection of a request by Alabama to drop the ACT Aspire test for its students in favor of different tests is spurring sentiment that the state may well be a “test case” to see how committed President Donald Trump and U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos are to “local control” of education.

Hyde Amendment Showdown on Obamacare

John and Andy Schlafly
06-14-2017

The Hyde Amendment has long been the single most important pro-life legislation at the federal level, originally enacted in 1976 and upheld on a 5-4 vote by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1980.  The amendment, which is an annual rider to the federal budget, prohibits the use of federal taxpayer dollars to fund abortion.

0213_Online learning is being increased to boost graduation rates–in order to receive school ranking and funding– By Zoe Kirsch_ Dallas Morning News – 6.6.17

Donna Jack
June 12, 2017

Online learning is increasingly being used to boost graduation rates.  Online learning replaces teacher classroom instruction time.

There is no measure of the quality of online learning — no quality contro!  Graduation rates are tied to the performance grade of schools.  Graduation rate increases are necessary for a school to receive funding – increases that must occur in order in order for principals to keep their jobs –and ultimately for schools to continue existing.

Do increased rates of student graduation from high school, automatically reflect what students have accomplished academically?  Or are graduation rate increases just empty goals to reach, in order for schools to get funding – and for principals to keep their jobs?  What does graduation from high school actually measure?  Does graduation necessarily measure anything – or does “graduation”insure any academic meaning at all?
