“Republicans and the lost promise of local control in education”
BY EMMETT MCGROARTY AND JANE ROBBINS, OPINION CONTRIBUTORS
When the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was enacted in 2015 to replace the hated No Child Left Behind law, the new legislation’s supporters trumpeted that, henceforth, control over education would reside with the states.
“With this bill,” Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) promised, “we are sending power back to the people.”
Commissioners – I appreciate the opportunity to speak.
Commissioner Szabo asked me to sort through colliding opinions about whether or not to accept HOME and CDBG money.
People on both sides are convinced they are looking out for people in this county – both sides are aware of a shortage of housing for seniors, low income working people, etc.
After weeks of interviews and study, I recommend voting against accepting HOME and CDBG money.
The people I talked with in our county government are working well over 8-hour days, to bring people out of poverty. They are providing personal counseling, and schooling to train people to become literate and competent, so they can qualify for better jobs. Some is financed with the help of HUD money.
People who don’t want us to accept the funding, are also working tirelessly. They research and inform, and find money to replace HOME and CDBG money. They believe that the federal government should get out of the housing business, so we can have a voice in where and how we live.

Despite his failure at presidential politics, Jeb Bush emerged from the recent campaign with perhaps unparalleled influence on K-12 education. Minions with ties to his Florida-based, Bill Gates-funded Foundation for Excellence in Education (FEE) are populating the U.S. Department of Education (USED) under Secretary Betsy DeVos, and FEE leverages Bush’s education legacy to push its preferred policies in multiple states. One of those policies is competency-based education (CBE).
To learn about those people and organizations pushing Common Core,
the History and goals of Common Core – and its status
Go to Links to blogs, that can be found listed at the end of this article. They give some detailed background, history and goals of Common Core. They are good for beginners, as well as for those of us who have studied Common Core for years. They can be a refresher and can offer new information. Continue reading →
Samples from Jane Robbins’
May 4, 2017 Competency-Based Education (CBE) article
“Our Choices: Minimum Competency Or Indoctrination. Some CBE proponents straightforwardly argue that education must be changed to focus less on instilling knowledge and more on training students in “twenty-first-century skills” such as creativity, communication, and collaboration.
Unencumbered by facts, the government can then establish its own definitions of what success looks like in those areas.”
“This is where CBE becomes much more dangerous than its predecessor OBE. Modern technology allows the training to be accomplished much more effectively, and with data-capture mechanisms that can literally reshape our children’s lives.”
“Slicing and Dicing Kids’ Minds for Market Digital learning uses interactive software to track the student’s every keystroke, and perhaps his psysiological reactions, to create a personal mind-map illustrating not just what the child knows but also how his brain works. This is perfect for CBE. Th Student can work his way through the different benchmarks at his own pace and have all his responses recorded and incorporated into an algorithm that shows where he is and where he’s likely to go.”
“According to the CEO of mind-mapper Knewton, the ed-tech companies will have so much data on each student that they can predict what he will do and tell him what he should do. Few parents want the government (through the schools) to have this much information on their children, but of course, parents won’t be told how all this works.”
“CBE isn’t real education. It’s a mechanism for control. States must reject it.

In Blog Post 0178 you can read Joseph Goebbels’ quote — it talks about making up a huge lie and repeating it over and over to manipulate people. You can also read his quote in Quotation 26 on the Quotations page of this website.
We need to be slow to judge people, and slow to anger. Those who wish to control us, use against us, our weakness to swiftly judge and to get angry. They keep repeating lies — lies that are designed to divide.
It is difficult to avoid judging people,
when quick harsh judgment is all around us every day.
Almost no matter where we go, people seem to be angry, saying bad things about people — frequently these uncomplimentary words are about people they don’t even know. People often seem to be eager to cut someone else down. These harsh unkind words are not only focused on strangers, but just as easily shift focus to people close to home: people in our schools, our churches, at work, in our neighborhoods, clubs … and in our own families .
Blog post 0090 goes into detail about “Label-Libel” — a term I found in a book
from a New Mexico teacher supply store.
Human nature is a combination of both good and bad. Those who have evil goals in mind to control other people, frequently take advantage of the weaknesses of human nature (greed, selfishness, dishonesty, pride, vengeance, gossip, hatred, anger, impatience). They encourage and feed these weaknesses, in order to divide us from each other, so that they can accomplish their own selfish goals.

Robert Morris first published “Soviets in the Classroom” in 1989, soon after he became the new chairman of the board at America’s Future. See Blogs #0173, 0174 & 0175, which talk about or mention the article “Soviets in the Classroom.”
This blog is an introduction to the organization called America’s Future, that began in 1946.
“Our historical commitment and our current strategic position make the United States the central redoubt of human liberty. If we fall, the lights of liberty will be extinguished all over the world for the foreseeable future.”
Robert Morris Self Destruct: Dismantling America’s Internal Security
“The original America’s Future, Inc., established in 1946, headquartered for many years in New Rochelle, New York, and now in St. Louis, Missouri — for 57 years [has been] dedicated to the preservation of our free enterprise system and our constitutional form of government.”
