“Dr. Duke Pesta and Dr. Sandra Stotsky Dissect Why Common Core Has Failed Every Child”

Published on Jan 4, 2018

FreedomProject’s Academic Director, Dr. Duke Pesta, interviews Dr. Sandra Stotsky on the demonstrable failures of Common Core. According to a new study from the Pioneer Institute, the move to Common Core has decimated academic achievement in Massachusetts. Prior to adopting the Core, Massachusetts schools and educational standards were the finest in the nation, in large part because of the work of Dr. Stotsky. Now, Common Core has relegated Massachusetts to the same underachieving, politicized, centralized mediocrity plaguing the rest of the country’s public schools. Some really rough notes (with errors) of the video
taken by Donna Ja
ck:

[Common Core] It is everywhere in our schools, and has evolved beyond English and Math – to become a national way to look at every subject.

It is in the textbooks, and other materials, and in our college readiness tests.  Anything aligned to Common Core is basically Common Core. Continue reading

0311_”Teachers’ Unions Support Student Walkouts As Protest To Change Gun Laws” By Dr. Susan berry — another effort from the Left (who have great control over most of our schools) to destabilize our country.

Donna Jack
March 14, 2018

I have witnessed since my first child went to school around 1975, that the schools have been used as Change Agents – to mold our country into a socialist paradise [which is an oxymoron (a combination of contradictory or incongruous words)]. One of the first things socialist governments do as they take over is to confiscate all guns.

This walk-out today is a continuation of the efforts of the Left to take away all guns.

The schools in my part of Colorado carried out this “walk-out” tactic during school hours, to use students to give the impression that the students were rising up — because they wanted the majority of 3 republicans on the school district school board to be recalled.  Once again, it was controlled and orchestrated by the school unions.  Unions pressured teachers, and teachers pressured students into marching.  Teachers called in”sick” and did not come to school.  This put a huge burden on the school district.  Students didn’t know why they were marching, except for sound bites told to them by their teachers.

You will find that this is the case today as well.  One friend told today, that her son’s teacher told his English class that they had to protest today.  The peer pressure alone is going to empty the schools — kids don’t like to be singled out – and they don’t want to be punished with low grades, or other methods of punishment used in the classrooms.

A quote from the end of the article below:

“Asking them to disrupt learning time, during the regular school day, to make a political statement is unconscionable,” she adds. “It shows what little regard national organizers actually have for the students whose individual schools they hope to destabilize or for the adults who are charged with running them.”

0303_WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING? (SEL) – BY J. R. WILSON (2/7/18) — possible federal ESSA funds for SEL

Donna Jack
February 11, 2018

A quotation from the article “What is so great about social-emotional learning” by J. R. Wilson (later in this blog piece):

Which comes first, feeling good about yourself so you can
accomplish something worthwhile,
or accomplishing something worthwhile
so you have something to feel good about?

Search online, and on the Table of Contents page of this site, for other information about SEL (Social Emotional Learning).  Social emotional learning (SEL) has been taking place in schools for decades, but SEL is now specifically named in the schools, and is touted as what education should be all about.

ESSA (federal education program) provides funding for SEL.  That is one result of ESSA being nationally implemented.  No, we have not gotten rid of Common Core and federal control of education.  You can find the following information online:

Funding for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in
ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act_Dec. 10, 2015)

http://www.ascd.org/ASCD/pdf/siteASCD/policy/ESSA-Resources_SEL-Funding.pdf
The list contains the specific programs (title and section number) for which ESSA funds may, potentially, be spent to support social-emotional learning (SEL) activities.

For those programs in existence under No Child Left Behind (NCLB), funding levels are provided for FY 2016.
ESSA-Resources_SEL-Funding_downloaded June 11, 2018 w link

Also search this site for “ESSA”(Every Student Succeed Act) – the federal legislation that cemented Common Core into federal law.  Note:  people in Congress and the U.S. Department of Education deny what ESSA did — and instead they parrot words claiming ESSA eliminated Common Core — claiming that education is now decided on a local level.  That is not what happened.  People too often parrot what they are told, without finding out for themselves.  Search this site for “Betsy DeVos.”

Understanding what SEL actually is, will enlighten you about:
1) a main cause of the dumbing down of American education;
2)  the data-gathering on identified students and everyone that touches their lives;
3)  the collecting of personal data, and storing it with personal identifiers — then distributing that data at will;
4) and the mind and behavior control that is actively taking place in schools across the country.  [This is all Type #2 education, rather than Type #1 education – see Home Page of this site]

0291_Jan. 1, 2018_DeVos’ Speech on Education Reform_ The Good, The Bad, and the Incomplete_ Jane Robbins, Emmett McGroarty excerpts _Common Core _ ESSA

January 18, 2018

Jane Robbins and Emmett McGroarty say U.S. Department of Education
Secretary Betsy DeVos is missing the obvious

Jane Robbins and Emmett McGroarty sent out an article, part of which is in this blog post.

In their article they point out that DeVos recommends making all learning individualized, with each student in front of a computer, possibly at home.

Jane and Emmett point out that:  “so-called personalized learning is actually depersonalized, computerized training rather than genuine education.

Robbins and McGroarty suggest Betsy DeVos improve education by:

(1) freeing the states from all federal mandates to the extent she can under the law; (2) working with Congress to revise ESSA to eliminate all mandates; and (3) creating a workable plan to shut down her department.”  (The U.S. Department of Education)

Editorial comment – more needs to be done:

There also needs to be a change in the content of what is taught in schools, and how students are being taught in schools — changing from Type #2 education, and returning to Type #1 education.  [Type #1 and Type #2 education are discussed on the Home Page of this website, and in blogs:  0005, 0091, and 0247]

Teachers need to be taught to teach, rather than being trained and forced to be facilitators and baby-sitters, spying and reporting on students, parents and other teachers.

Information on ESSA (Every Child Succeeds Act)

ESSA (Every Child Succeeds Act) codified individual data tracking, social, emotional, behavioral and attitude standards and interventions, and a lot more:   0252, 0248, 0244, 0206, 0205, 0097

ESSA didn’t change some of what was already going on in many schools, but since it became federal law in December 2015, it has been officially forcing every school to comply.

0257_Colorado Rep. Tim Leonard reports Jeffco School Superintendent Glass to impose new across-the-board left-wing curriculum–letters–links to new resource list to accompany new curriculum

Educator Resources – downloaded 2017-10-16 from website
Other blogs about this subject:Gramma Griizzly’s Corner

Colorado Representative Tim Leonard has done us a service, by alerting us to “abuse in the classroom” being expanded through “new” curriculum being imposed on all grades from K-12 — claiming to be in response to events at Charlottesville.  Our Jeffco Public Schools Superintendent justifies his unilateral imposition of the “new” curriculum, and says he is doing it because Jeffco Schools wants children to have an “authentic learning experience.”

In his September 28, 2017 letter, Superintendent Glass links to the Educator Resources for the new curriculum.   If you read through the resource guide, it is evident the children are being pushed to hate.  The curriculum and resources are from a destructive radical left-wing viewpoint.  EVERYTHING is hateful.  Teaching children to hate in the name of fighting hatred, is ridiculous.  Groups recommended as a resource, have an obvious left-wing bias that you can see on their websites – and the curriculum focuses on hate, negativity, and censorship.  Go to Blog 0261 on this website, for a video by Prager University, explaining who the SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center) is.

You can link to the Educator Resources document, which has live links to most of the groups being used for Superintendent Glass’ new curriculum content — and examples of their curriculum plans.  Note the international, not American, emphasis on some sites.

How do children learn to be kind and loving?

Children learn to be loving and kind by witnessing love and kindness — not by being shown  negative ugliness over and over every day.  Those behind this curriculum know exactly what they are doing!  They are conditioning our children through this curriculum (and all other curriculum that is like it), to hate and to act out their hatred — beginning in kindergarten.  [Note:  they have influence in preschool and day care as well.]

Subject: Fwd: Message to Jeffco Public Schools community regarding Charlottesville, VA

To some interested Jeffco Public School folks,

The message below was sent to me on 16 August as a parent of children in Jeffco public schools from the new Superintendent Jason Glass.  It informed me that he has decided to introduce new curriculum into the Jeffco schools in all grades in order to use the events at Charlottesville for an “authentic learning experience” for the children.

Twelve days later on 28 Aug, I was sent another more detailed message as a Jefferson County Legislator explaining the significant amount of interpretive information the Superintendent’s “curriculum and instructional team has pulled together for educators” regarding the violence.  I have included this email information for you as well. “New Jeffco Superintendent Widening the Great Divide”
by John Newkirk

Author’s note: A number of legislators have contacted me about a suggested curriculum put forth by our new school superintendent — and I was not the only one surprised by its one-sidedness.  My resulting Opinion column appeared in the Courier newspapers on 9/20/2017:

Newly-seated Jeffco Public Schools superintendent Jason Glass certainly wasted no time in thrusting our students into the political mosh pit. Continue reading

Sept. 04, 2017

Two years, one month, and one week ago, on July 28, 2015, I posted my first blog on this website.

A listing of all the posts can be found in the Table of Contents — each entry in the Table of Contents has a link to the corresponding blog post.

The Home Page shows what is wrong with education —
and
the most critical thing to understand
in order to reverse the decline in education today – and to save our nation.

How do we fix the rapid decline in the education of too many people who do not graduate, and too many who do graduate from High Schools, Colleges and Universities?

It is not the condition of the buildings and other facilities — it is not the talent and good intentions and dedication of highly trained and competent teachers, administrators, counselors, teacher librarians, and all the support staff — it is not the freedom to choose the school a child attends (especially if all schools have Type #2 education) — it is not the amount of interest of the parents, or of the students — it is not computerizing all education and gathering more and more data on children, families, teachers, etc. — it is not simply emphasis on certain subjects like sports, music, art, science, technology, mathematics, language arts, reading, writing — it is not focus on becoming a global citizen — it is not in forcing all students to accept everything that students do and believe (unless they are politically incorrect).  Standardizing all attitudes, values, beliefs and behaviors is not the answer, either — and training children to want to change their sexual identity will not improve education standards.

The thing that really matters is THE TYPE OF EDUCATION BEING TAUGHT IN THE CURRICULUM — THE CONTENT.  Type #2 education is taking over our country — to the detriment of everyone.  We need a shift back to Type #1.

conversion of public schools from places of learning into therapeutic institutions for diagnosing and treating perceived social-emotional problems.

DESSA is there to rate students on their behaviors but then to offer intervention to improve their scores. Social awareness is one of the key competencies to ensure the students are aware and accepting of race and diversity.”

“too many public schools no longer focus on imparting academic knowledge. Rather, egged on by the federal government and private players, they consider children to be patients in need of treatment to dislodge personality characteristics that don’t match the government’s preferred profile.”

“Mental Health Assessments or Standardized Testing? Lines Are Blurring.” – by Emmett McGroarty

This piece was co-authored by Jane Robbins, an attorney and senior fellow at the American Principles Project.

In The Wall Street Journal recently, New Hampshire physician Dr. Aida Cerundolo blew the whistle on faux mental-health assessment of public-school students in the Granite State. Some K-8 students are being subjected to blanket screening by untrained, unlicensed personnel, with serious questions about use or protection of the resulting records. And parents not only haven’t consented to this process, they haven’t even been told it’s happening. Continue reading

0206_Education Secretary Betsy DeVos Implies Common Core Are ‘High Standards’ — she is wrong — by Dr. Susan Berry (May 6, 2017)_Dr. Sandra Stotsky_ Mike Pence_Dr. Jason Zimba_Dr. James Milgrim_Ze’ev Wurman

THIS IS A FOLLOW-UP ON BLOG 0205–Go to Blog 0205 for background information connected with this article.

Comments about:   Common Core and ESSA – and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

Common Core was coercively pushed on school districts and states across our country,  (using force and threats in addition to bribery) — it was deceptively implemented, keeps growing in its scope, and has not gone away.

Common Core was officially made federal law (ESSA) in December 2015.  If Betsy DeVos does not know that, or if she does and is hiding it, she should not be our Education Secretary.  We need someone who will honestly and thoroughly champion for local control of education — not just in words, and not just in little parts – but have local control truly be the top priority.

Go to the end of Blog 0205, for some links to other blogs on this website that deal with Common Core.  They contain information that will be helpful to people who know nothing about Common Core, and they are also excellent resources for people who have studied Common Core for years.

0201_Why Competency-based Education will Deepen America’s Education Crisis—by Jane Robbins

May 4, 2017

Donna Garner forwarded this article across the country today.  Following are a few selections from the article.  You can link the article at:  http://thefederalist.com/2017/05/04/competency-based-education-will-deepen-americas-education-crisis/

Samples from Jane Robbins’
May 4, 2017 Competency-Based Education (CBE) article

“Our Choices: Minimum Competency Or Indoctrination. Some CBE proponents straightforwardly argue that education must be changed to focus less on instilling knowledge and more on training students in “twenty-first-century skills” such as creativity, communication, and collaboration.
Unencumbered by facts, the government can then establish its own definitions of what success looks like in those areas.”

“This is where CBE becomes much more dangerous than its predecessor OBE. Modern technology allows the training to be accomplished much more effectively, and with data-capture mechanisms that can literally reshape our children’s lives.”

“Slicing and Dicing Kids’ Minds for Market Digital learning uses interactive software to track the student’s every keystroke, and perhaps his psysiological reactions, to create a personal mind-map illustrating not just what the child knows but also how his brain works.  This is perfect for CBE.  The Student can work his way through the different benchmarks at his own pace and have all his responses recorded and incorporated into an algorithm that shows where he is and where he’s likely to go.”

“According to the CEO of mind-mapper Knewton, the ed-tech companies will have so much data on each student that they can predict what he will do and tell him what he should do.  Few parents want the government (through the schools) to have this much information on their children, but of course, parents won’t be told how all this works.”

“CBE isn’t real education. It’s a mechanism for control. States must reject it.
Jane Robbins is an attorney and a senior fellow with the American Principles Project in Washington DC. She is a graduate of Clemson University and the Harvard Law School.”
