Conifer Kiwanis Club sponsors the Reading Program

Kiwanis Club of Conifer, Colorado sponsors a local reading program.  Near the end of the school year they have an event of fun, acknowledgements, and awards.

Through this program, Conifer Kiwanis has contributed over $10,000 to the reading programs in local elementary schools.  But the benefits to the children can’t be measured in those dollars.  Children are inspired to read!Boy who advanced 5 levels with other children IMG_4857

The picture on the right was taken at the annual end-of-school-year  event held in 2016.  It was an event honoring 3rd graders who participated in the Kiwanis reading program.  Friends, family, teachers, principals, and others representing the schools attended.  See Blog 0188.

Dr. Wheeler is pictured to the left, with a student,  after signing the book he gave her.  He personally contributes one of his books to each 3rd grader in the reading program.  This student, like all the 3rd graders, chose her book from a list of books  Dr. Wheeler’s gave to each child.  She proudly holds up her new book, and a certificate.

One special gift is awarded to a 3rd grader whose name is drawn from all the names of the 3rd grade children in the program, who are present.  Last year Dr. Wheeler outdid himself, and gave to a happy young girl whose name was drawn, his entire 10-volume collection of animal stories.  It ended up a great inspiration to her, which has increased her love for reading!

Dr. Wheeler December 6, 2017 AM91 radio interview –
and podcast of the interview

In recent Christmas seasons, Dr. Joe Wheeler has been a guest on AM91 radio.  December 6th he was on the program from 7:00 -9:00 a.m.  He was interviewed about his life, education, teaching and writing experiences.

Dr. Wheeler talked about the Conifer Kiwanis program that sponsors a reading program and shared about the  book signing that he does each year at Conifer King Soopers.

Because of the radio program (linked here and below), two couples came to the book signing at King Soopers the day after the interview.  Jim had heard the broadcast, and brought his wife and the other couple with him.  The four of them had a happy adventure looking at all the books, visiting with Dr. Wheeler, and choosing books they will give as gifts this Christmas.  They also bought some books for themselves!

They were especially happy about the individual words that Dr. Wheeler wrote on each book.  He has a specific inscription he does for each of his 98 books, and he is glad to write who the book is to an from, if requested.

Dr. Wheeler shared on the radio broadcast, how 26 years ago, Focus on the Family’s James Dobson introduced on his radio program, Dr. Wheeler’s first Christmas in My Heart (a collection of Christmas stories).  The rest is history – this year Christmas in My Heart, volume 26 was published  — with a new collection of Christmas stories, including one Dr. Wheeler wrote especially for this edition.  Every year he writes a new story of his own for Christmas in My Heart.
